All skates we carry are in MEN'S American sizes.

Generally speaking, men-sized skates run about a size to a size and half larger than female shoe sizes.
But shoe sizes aren't a reliable way to choose, because fit is very important. Tight skates hurt and can injure the small bones in your feet (sometimes permanently) - and loose skates lead to blisters, callouses and pain.

Properly fitting skates do NOT give you blisters or callouses. A lot of people think blisters and callouses come with the territory; its just not true. Your skates just don't fit as well as they could. With that said, I own a skate shop and have only had one pair of skates that didn't give me callouses. Sometimes its not possible to get a perfect fit off the shelf. And few people can afford custom-fits. Hopefully this advice can help you get as close as possible off the shelf, however!

Nothing substitutes for trying skates on. But if you can't, please measure your feet and consider these factors:

  1. Wide or narrow feet - if they're wide, choose larger skates or look for skate packages with a note recommending them for wide feet, or any that lace to the toe so you can adjust the width yourself).
  2. Your preferred sock configuration. That sounds dumb, but talk to any rollergirl and they will swear by whatever configuration they think helped with their blisters. I wear one pair of thick, preferably 100% cotton athletic socks. My roommate wears cotton bootie socks and thick soccer socks over them. Some wear nylons then socks. ETC. So how thick you wear your socks matters.
  3. Ankle braces and arch supports. If you plan on using them, get a larger size skates. I would not spend 10+ hours a week on my skates without arch supports, personally. I go through a pair about once a month, and I make sure I replace them regularly. My doctor did not recommend wearing ankle braces because he said it prevents your ankles from getting strong on their own. However, if you've had previous ankle injuries (old soccer/hockey/softball players?), you might have to.
  4. Your profession. If you work on your feet all day, they will be at least a size larger at night than they were when you climbed out of bed. Most roller derby practices are at night - so keep that in mind!
I recommend that you talk to your teammates and ask to try their skates on. Nothing substitutes for that - and they will also have the best advice for you about they're favorite wheels on your practice track. But I will do whatever I can to help, so call or email me anytime!

Riedell Boot Size Chart Check our Riedell Boot size chart! I can help you choose the right size if you send me your measurements.
Please measure your foot:
1. At the end of the day (feet often swell up to a size and a half!)
2. In socks (whatever type you wear in skates)
3. Standing up on a ruler

* A hint is to put the ruler on the floor against the wall and then your heel against the wall, too, so you're measuring from the farthest point back on your foot, rather than where your heel touches the ground *

Send us the exact measurement in inches from your longest toe to the back of your heel and we'll be that much closer to fitting you properly.

More advice directly from Riedell:

  • The 125, 395, 595, 695 can all be custom-made in a wide width (for an additional $50), allowing 3 weeks for production & delivery. The factory only stocks mediums.
  • The 125, 395, 595, 695 can also be *stretched* close to a wide width (for an additional $15 and a day on the stretcher), with more success than Torqs because they are made with higher-grade leather.
  • If you order a ½ size larger in a skate, it will feel like a wide due to the longer length.
  • 122, 125, 195, 595 & 695 Riedell boots are made on the "248" last (foot shape). If you measure standing, in socks, and round up to the nearest size, this stick is pretty accurate.
  • 265, 395, 811, 911 and 951 boots are made on the "395" last, which has a larger toebox. This makes them feel wider, so many skaters will wear a half size *smaller* (because they feel bigger) in these boots than the one built on the 248 last.
All stock skates are returnable! Please see the returns policy for details. We'll do what it takes to get you in the right skates.

* A Note About Blisters: Unless you have skates that fit you absolutely perfectly, you are likely to get a nasty blister on your pusher foot regardless of what skates you buy. If you carefully drain it (see blog about wicking or search "blisters" on roller_girls) and let it keep healing over, and eventually you can have a little pusher foot creature that doesn't hurt at all and glows pretty when you put your bare foot in the sunlight. Say goodbye to pedicures! We love our little creatures.
